Sending money home from Qatar: the real cost, safe channels and the rules at home
How to send money from Qatar by bank, exchange house or app, how to work out what a transfer really costs, the scams and unlicensed dealers to avoid, and the accounts, tax rules and incentives in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

At a glance
- Bring enough money for payments at home in your first weeks. Banks and exchange houses ask for your Qatar ID.
- Compare what your family receives after the fee and the exchange rate, with two or three providers.
- Send larger amounts less often. Much of the fee is fixed, so small transfers cost more for each riyal sent.
- Use a bank or an exchange house licensed by Qatar Central Bank. Never use hawala, hundi or street dealers.
- Never pay a government fee into a personal account, and never share a one time password.
- From India, have your savings account redesignated as NRO, and consider an NRE account for money you send home.
- From Pakistan or Bangladesh, use legal channels to keep free transfers or the 2.5% incentive.
Your ways to send money from Qatar
Most people send money home through a bank, an exchange house or a money transfer service. Expect to show your Qatar ID, so until it is issued you may not be able to send money at all. Bring enough to cover payments at home for your first weeks.
- Banks. Qatari banks send international transfers from their apps and online banking. QIB launched Direct Remit in 2020, promising money in an Indian bank account within 60 seconds. Dukhan Bank launched its own service in 2022, promising transfers to India within 60 seconds. In 2019 Doha Bank and HBL launched real time transfers to HBL accounts in Pakistan. These are launch claims, so check today’s terms.
- Exchange houses. Licensed exchange companies such as Alfardan, Al Dar and Unimoni send money from their branches and apps. moneytransfers.com, a comparison site, says their fees and rates vary by quote.
- Western Union. Its online and app service in Qatar is run by Alfardan Exchange, and you pay with a debit card issued in Qatar. You can also pay in cash at an agent, where you show your Qatar ID. Western Union’s figure of more than 360 locations in Qatar dates from June 2019.
- Ooredoo Money. A mobile wallet that also sends money abroad. moneytransfers.com lists its international fees from QAR 20, plus QAR 30 a year to keep the wallet.

What a transfer really costs
Every transfer has two costs: the fee, and the exchange rate margin, which is the gap between the rate you get and the mid market rate. A transfer with no fee can still cost more than one with a fee.
The World Bank collects prices for sending money from Qatar to India. Its latest survey, from August 2025, found:
- Sending USD 200 (about QAR 730) cost 2.50% on average, about QAR 18. Sending USD 500 cost 1.37%, about QAR 25. The average fee was QAR 13.86 for both, so the larger transfer cost much less for each riyal sent.
- The average exchange rate margin was 0.61%.
- Western Union was the cheapest of the seven quotes collected, at 1.33% for USD 200 and 0.92% for USD 500. Al Dar Exchange was the dearest, at 3.59% and 1.79%.
- At Doha Bank, online cost less than a branch: 2.31% against 2.99% for USD 200. Western Union charged the same online and at an agent.
- So send larger amounts less often where you can, and compare the amount your family will receive with two or three providers on the day you send. Prices and offers change often.

Sending to the UK, Europe, North America and Australia
If you keep paying a mortgage, a loan or bills at home, you need a regular transfer into a bank account there.
- Wise cannot take riyals. moneytransfers.com says Qatar residents can hold foreign balances with Wise, but cannot fund a transfer directly in QAR, and cannot get the Wise card.
- Qatari banks send transfers to accounts abroad. The same site lists QNB’s charges as a QAR 15 fee plus 0.15% of the amount for salaried customers, or 0.50% for others, capped at QAR 1,000. It says QIB adds a GBP 10 correspondent charge on transfers to the UK.
- Western Union pays into bank accounts in many countries. It says the receiving account must be in the local currency.
- Ask whether a correspondent bank or the receiving bank will deduct a fee, so the amount that arrives covers the payment due.

Use licensed channels only
Use a bank or an exchange house licensed by Qatar Central Bank. QCB has warned against dealing with any unlicensed financial institution or service provider, including those that advertise on social media, and says it takes legal action against them.
- Changing money with an unlicensed dealer can end in arrest. In January 2024 the Ministry of Interior’s criminal investigators arrested a man caught taking riyals in exchange for an Asian currency, and referred him to the authorities for legal action.
- Hawala and hundi are illegal in Pakistan. Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency arrested 667 people in its 2025 crackdown on hawala, hundi and illegal currency exchange. Bangladesh pays its 2.5% incentive only on money sent through legal channels.
- Money sent outside banks and exchange houses also loses Pakistan’s free transfers, and leaves your family without a bank certificate showing where it came from.
- In 2022, QCB said no institution in Qatar was licensed to exchange, transfer or trade virtual assets, such as cryptocurrency.

Scams to watch for
In June 2026 the Ministry of Labour warned of requests, made in its name, to transfer money to personal bank accounts to provide services or speed up procedures.
- All Ministry of Labour fees are paid through official channels ending in mol.gov.qa. Never pay a government fee into a personal account.
- Never share a one time password, a verification code or your banking password with anyone.
- Check any link before you open it, and do not give banking details to an unofficial contact.
- If a caller claiming to be from the Ministry of Labour asks for money or codes, end the call. Report it to the ministry’s hotline on 16505.
India: the accounts to use
When you become a non resident, RBI says your existing resident account should be redesignated as an NRO account. Tell your bank before you leave.
- NRE account. For money you bring in from abroad. You can send the balance back abroad at any time, and the interest is tax free in India while you live abroad. It can be held jointly with a resident relative, on a former or survivor basis.
- NRO account. For income that arises in India, such as rent, dividends or a pension. The interest is taxable. You can send current income, such as rent, abroad after tax. Beyond that, RBI allows up to USD 1 million a financial year, April to March, across the NRO balance and your other assets in India together, subject to its conditions. You can move money into an NRE account within that limit.
- FCNR(B) deposit. A term deposit of 1 to 5 years, held in a foreign currency such as US dollars, so your savings are not exposed to the rupee. RBI treats it like an NRE account: you can send it back abroad, and the interest is tax free while you live abroad.
- UPI. NRE and NRO accounts can use UPI with an international mobile number. Qatar was on the first list of ten countries, in January 2023. Ask your bank whether it offers this.

India: tax, gifts and investments
- As a non resident, you are taxed in India only on income that arises there or that you receive there. Salary paid in Qatar for work in Qatar falls outside it.
- Money you send to your parents, spouse, children, brothers or sisters counts as a gift from a relative, which is tax free for them.
- Interest on NRO accounts and deposits is taxable in India. Fixed deposits you opened as a resident become NRO deposits.
- Mutual funds. Update your KYC to NRI status and link the funds to an NRO account. Business Standard says existing SIPs can continue.
- Shares. NSE says you can keep shares bought as a resident, on a non repatriable basis, and need a new trading account as an NRI. To buy shares whose sale proceeds you can send abroad, you go through a bank’s Portfolio Investment Scheme.
- PPF. Business Standard reported in October 2024 that NRIs can keep an existing account until it matures but cannot extend it, and that NRI accounts already extended beyond 15 years stopped earning interest from 1 October 2024. Ask your bank or post office before you pay more in.
- NPS is open to Indian citizens living abroad.

Pakistan: free transfers and the Roshan Digital Account
Pakistan keeps eligible home remittances free of charge. The State Bank of Pakistan ended the scheme that paid banks for this on 1 July 2026, and told banks and exchange companies that eligible remittances must stay free for the sender and the receiver.
- Since July 2025 a transfer must be at least USD 200, or the same in another currency, to be free. Pakistani exchange companies are covered as well as banks. Only five transfers a month from one sender to the same receiver, through the same overseas partner, are free. Several transfers on one day from that sender to that receiver count as one. The State Bank kept these rules when the scheme ended in July 2026.
- Ask your bank or exchange house in Qatar whether its transfer to Pakistan carries a fee. The exchange rate margin still applies.
- Sohni Dharti ended on 1 July 2026. Points earned up to 30 June 2026 can still be redeemed with the partner government bodies until 30 June 2027. Redemption with PIA has been paused since 1 April 2026.
- Roshan Digital Account. Non resident Pakistanis can open one online, in foreign currency or rupees, and send the money back abroad at any time without approval. Profit on the account is tax free for non residents when the money comes from abroad.
- Holding the account does not by itself mean you must file a tax return in Pakistan, as long as your only Pakistani income comes from the account and investments made through it. Other things can still require a return, such as owning a large plot or flat, a car with an engine above 1,000cc, or a National Tax Number. The higher tax rates for people who do not file do not apply to these accounts.
- Tax. As a non resident, you are taxed in Pakistan only on income from Pakistan. Check that you are one. A Pakistani citizen is resident for a tax year after 183 days or more in Pakistan. Since 2022 a citizen is also resident if they spend no more than 182 days in any other country that year, or are not a resident taxpayer of any other country. Qatar does not tax salaries, so ask a tax adviser or FBR how this applies to you.
- Remittances of up to Rs 5 million in a tax year cannot be treated as unexplained income, as long as a bank changed them into rupees and its certificate is produced. Exchange companies and money transfer operators count as normal banking channels. Ask the receiving bank for the certificate.

Bangladesh: the 2.5% incentive, accounts and bonds
Bangladesh adds a 2.5% government cash incentive to money sent home through legal channels. The budget for 2026 to 2027 keeps it.
- The receiving bank pays the incentive with the remittance, and the government repays the bank later.
- Ask the receiving bank what papers it needs for large amounts. In May 2022 Bangladesh Bank dropped the rule that remitters show documents to get the incentive on USD 5,000 or more, The Financial Express reported.
- Banks may open foreign currency accounts for non resident Bangladeshis in usable currencies they accept, and set their own interest rates. Banks may also let you open a non resident taka account online, and you can name someone in Bangladesh to operate it.
- Wage Earner Development Bonds, US Dollar Premium Bonds and US Dollar Investment Bonds are sold to Bangladeshis abroad. There has been no limit on how much you can invest since 1 December 2024, and their income is tax free.
- Income a Bangladeshi citizen earns abroad and brings into Bangladesh through legal channels is exempt from income tax there.
